UPDATED: 10:22 am PDT June 23, 2004

Santa Clara County officials will participate in a ceremony Wednesday to commemorate the completion of the Tasman East-Capitol Light Rail Extension.

The $434 million project extends light rail transit 6 miles into Milpitas and East San Jose, according to Valley Transportation Authority spokeswoman Brandi Hall.

Included in the project is the creation of eight new stations and two transit centers to serve customers along the Great Mall Parkway and Capitol Avenue, Hall said.

The new extension was funded through the Measure B Transportation Improvement Program approved by voters in 1996.

Hall said the inaugural trains will arrive at the station at 11:30 a.m.

Following the ceremony, the VTA will offer free rides for commuters along the new extension.
