Protests continued in the streets of San Francisco on Monday to persuade Mayor Gavin Newsom to rethink hosting the Olympic torch run in the city over allegations of China's poor treatment of Tibet.

Burmese Activists To SF: Drop Torch Run Completely

UPDATED: 2:05 pm PDT March 28, 2008

The gathering storm of protest of alleged Chinese human rights abuses has brought Burmese activists groups Friday to call on the city of San Francisco to withdraw its welcome of the Olympic torch completely.

The groups plan on rallying this afternoon at City Hall and presenting a petition to Mayor Gavin Newsom in advance of the Beijing Olympic torch's April 9 stop in San Francisco.

The organizations -- the Burmese American Democratic Alliance; Sasana Moli, an international organization of Burmese monks; and the Buddhist Peace Fellowship -- say that welcoming the torch conflicts with an earlier resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors supporting democratic reform in Burma.

The groups contend Burma's military regime is supported by the Chinese government.

Burma was the site last August of widespread pro-democracy protests by Buddhist monks, many of whom were subsequently detained in a government crackdown.

Other groups have protested the arrival of the Olympic torch in San Francisco, including supporters of Tibetan independence, those calling for freedom of religion for Falun Gong practitioners in China, and those demanding an end to what they claim is Chinese support of atrocities in Darfur.

Today's rally is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in front of City Hall.
