SF DA Offers Program For Youth Criminals To Avoid Jail Time

SAN FRANCISCO -- A ceremony will be held in San Francisco Thursday evening to recognize those who have recently completed a program that offers young adult first-time drug offenders who have pleaded guilty to a felony an alternative to jail, District Attorney Kamala Harris announced.The Back on Track program pairs strict accountability and close supervision with mental health services, employment support and health care education, according to the district attorney's office.The program is a public-private partnership between the district attorney's office and social nonprofits Goodwill Industries and the Family Service Agency of San Francisco.
More than 90 people are enrolled in Back on Track and Thursday's ceremony will recognize nine people who recently completed the program, eight of whom will be in attendance, the district attorney's office reported.Deborah Alvarez-Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties, and Harris were also scheduled to attend.The event will be at 5:30 p.m. in Jury Assembly Room 007 of the Civil Court House, 400 McAllister St.According to the district attorney's office, 90 percent of Back on Track participants haven't reoffended.
