SF Gang Member Gets 50 Years For Shooting Rival In Face 6 Times

SAN FRANCISCO -- By Sajid Farooq, Web ProducerSan Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris announced on Friday a Norteno gang member who shot a man six times in the face received the maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prisonMarcos Campos Reyes, 22, shot Luis Fuentes to death in June 2004 as the victim was walking with his 6-year-old son, according to Erica Terry Derryck, deputy public information officer at Harris' office.
"This defendant committed a brazen and horrific crime," said Harris. "I can think of no better place for this man to spend the rest of his days than behind bars. I applaud everyone involved in this case for their diligence and thank the witnesses who came forward during the police investigation and court proceedings for their courage in bringing this defendant to justice."Reyes, a resident of Daly City, was convicted of murder in the second degree, gang allegations and the jury also found Reyes guilty of gun use. The verdicts followed a nearly two-month trial. Reyes shot Fuentes six times in the face, twice in the back of the head and three times in the back-with a full capacity revolver on 24th and Hampshire streets, according to court documents.The incident took place at approximately 7:40 p.m. on June 26, 2004.Fuentes was a Salvadoran immigrant and Sureno gang member, according to Derryck.Reyes was detained and arrested by the San Francisco Police Department less than half an hour after the shooting, according to Derryck.A woman parking her car heard the first shot, and saw Reyes run after Fuentes, according to Derryck.She then followed Reyes and saw him throw the gun into some flower pots, according to Derryck.A man also saw the Reyes running after hearing the shots, according to Derryck.Both individuals saw Reyes run into a laundromat, according to Derryck who said .the male witness called 911 on his cell phone and waited at the laundromat for police, while the woman returned to the scene of the shooting, alerted police that she knew where the shooter was and led them to the laundromat.Police found Reyes hiding in the back of the laundromat, according to Derryck.The weapon, along with Reye's DNA was also recovered, according to Derryck who said he also made statements to another person in custody shortly after the shooting.
