A San Rafael animal rights group is offering $2,500 rewards to people who uncover animal cruelty at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, officials announced Thursday.

The group In Defense Of Animals (IDA) also established a hot Line as part of what group officials called a “whistleblower campaign” to uncover, “expose and document” abuse at the theme park.

People who see cruelty, negligence or abuse at the park are encouraged to call 1-888-4-ZOO-TIP.

The group said anonymity would be guaranteed.

The reward would be given if the information provided leads to the conviction of Six Flags or its agents for violations of federal, state or local animal cruelty laws.

The group has also taken out a series of ads in local papers publicizing the campaign.

The group said the campaign was being launched as a way to commemorate the 2-month anniversary of the death of Makonnen, a 2-year-old giraffe who died in an overnight fire at the park.

Park officials said a malfunctioning electrical system is the suspected culprit.

IDA officials said the giraffe was one of numerous animals – including seven elephants, two orcas and at least four dolphins – that have died at the park since Six Flags took over management a decade ago.

“We know that there are park employees who care about animals and are distressed by the way they are treated at this amusement park,” said IDA president Elliot M. Katz. “Our whistleblower program will enable them to help the animals at Six Flags without fear of losing their jobs.”

Katz said that the several former park employees who have come forward with allegations of negligence and abuse did not feel comfortable doing so while still employed at the park.

IDA has been critical of the parkÂ’s treatment of animals in years past.
