SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- NBC11 confirmed Tuesday evening that San Francisco state Sen. Carole Migden is back in the driver's seat. The state Department of Motor Vehicles decided to return Migden's license on a probationary basis.Migden was criticized in May when she erratically drove down Interstate 80, causing several drivers to call 911 before Migden, in her state-issued SUV, rear-ended another car.
Migden, a San Francisco Democrat, will be on probation for a year, DMV spokesman Mike Marando said. She'll have to avoid any moving violations to keep her license during that time, he said. The DMV suspended Migden's license July 15, after she suggested that medications she had been taking for leukemia may have contributed to her disorientation during the May incident.I-80 motorists saw her bang the median, swerve across the lanes and narrowly miss hitting other vehicles before she rear-ended another car on Highway 12 outside of Fairfield.Migden appealed the suspension in a hearing before a DMV driving safety officer in late August. The officer considered information about the collision, Migden's medical condition and her own testimony, Marando said.Last month, Migden, 59, pleaded no contest in Solano County to misdemeanor reckless driving and was sentenced to two years of court-supervised probation.
