SAN DIEGO -- The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Web site was hacked to leak a private recording, NBC 11 News reported on Tuesday.NBC 11's political analyst Larry Gerston said the governor's privately recorded then publicly leaked comments about Assemblywoman. Bonnie Garcia's Puerto Rican heritage spotlighted a glaring disparity between values and technology."We're at a point in our time where social and political values have not kept up with tech advances ... that leads us to (a) curious point in time," Gerston said.
Phil Angelides Campaign Manager Cathy Calfo said they got the recording legally."I will say that these audio files, accessed through a public Web site, requiring absolutely no password, and not marked confidential are a matter of public record, and should be made available to the media and the public," she said. However, Katie Levinson, Gov. Schwarzenegger's campaign communications director, disagrees."I think it is one of the most unethical acts in the history of California politics, and Phil Angelides should apologize."NBC 11 News went to Forensic Analyst Mike Murr to find out how a private recording becomes public.Murr took a look at the governor's site."I don't see anything up front that says password protected or private," Murr said. "It is possible someone could have made a typo saved to wrong system. (It is) also possible (it is) some type of malicious attack. "Murr said he does not have any specific information about how it happened.
