SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sky-high temperatures are not just hard on people. Pets suffer tooThe current heat wave turned deadly for at least one pet over the weekend. The Contra Costa Veterinary Emergency Center told NBC11 they lost one bulldog, who came in with seizures because of the heat.
Veterinarians told NBC11 a few dogs have come in with temperatures over 110 degrees.Dr. Elizabeth Rogers said, "We're seeing a lot of cases of heat stroke here, because animals are getting overheated. We're seeing in animals when they are furry and they're out in the sun and they're getting overheated and we're seeing them panting. They'll be listless, not willing to get up and move around. Their gums will be bright red. In some cases, the worst cases, there will actually be seizures and not able to walk and those cases are quite critical."To keep your pets safe, veterinarians recommend that you keep them indoors and make sure they have shade if they are out in the yard. Vets recommend giving them plenty of fresh water and hose them off it they are getting really hot.
