DUI Arrests Up, Traffic Deaths Down During Holiday Weekend

DUI arrests are up and traffic deaths are down in California Highway Patrol jurisdictions for the Memorial Day weekend, according to a preliminary report released by the California Highway Patrol. Statewide, CHP officers arrested 1,024 people for drunken driving beginning at 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Sunday.There were 69 more arrests during the time period at this time last year, according to the CHP.
There was one fatal collision in the CHP's jurisdiction in the Bay Area between Friday evening and Sunday morning. During the same period last Memorial Day weekend, the CHP reported no fatal collisions. Statewide, there were 17 traffic deaths in city police and CHP jurisdictions combined. There were 19 in the same period last year. Further updates are expected, according to the CHP.
