SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A San Jose State University student who disappeared more than a week ago has contacted his family. Jason Shaughnessy, of San Mateo, was supposed to graduate Saturday but has not shown up for work or at home since May 17, university police Sgt. John Laws said.Shaughnessy's family went to the commencement ceremony, but the 23-year-old was a no-show.
Shaughnessy's uncle told NBC11 News Saturday night that he called home and said he needed to get away and was dealing with personal issues. They did not say if they knew where Shaughnessy has been for the last 10 days.Police also went to the graduation ceremony, hoping for some leads to his whereabouts. "At this time we have not located him, but we are looking," said Laws prior the 9:30 a.m. start of the graduation ceremony. According to Laws, the cell phone company Verizon has confirmed that someone recently used Shaughnessy's cell phone, as well as a personal identification number for the phone, which leads police to believe that someone was checking his voice mail. Friends said they last saw Shaughnessy as he headed out of his Campus Village apartment at about 11 a.m. on May 17. He did not come home that night, nor did he show up for work at a San Jose law firm the next day. Shaughnessy's friends reported him missing at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday, about a week after he disappeared. Although Shaughnessy lived on campus, he also stayed with a relative at an apartment in San Mateo, Laws said. No one has seen him there, either. "UPD does take this very seriously," Laws said. "We want to find him and we want to make sure he is safe." Police have not discovered any evidence to indicate that Shaughnessy, an administrative justice major, has fallen victim to a crime, though nothing is ruled out, Laws said. Family members and friends are "very worried," Laws added. He said police are in the process of checking whether Shaughnessy went to any of his final exams this week. In addition to checking his cell phone records, police are looking through Shaughnessy's credit card and bank records to gather as much information as possible about his activities. Local police agencies are also involved in the search, he said. Authorities are looking for Shaughnessy's car, a 2001 black Ford Mustang convertible with the California license plate 4UDC752. Shaughnessy is about 6 feet 1 inch tall, with an athletic build, brown hair, blue eyes and long sideburns. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt, jeans and a blue baseball cap. Anyone who has seen Shaughnessy or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call university police at 408-924-2222.
