SAN FRANCISCO -- More protests are planned for Monday to mark the third anniversary of the war in Iraq. The day began with a rowdy protest outside Sen. Dianne Feinstein's office on busy Post Street in San Francisco. The group "Act Against Torture" said Feinstein isn't doing enough to get the troops out of Iraq. There was a heavy police presence at the protest with some estimates saying there were as many police officers as protesters.
17 people were arrested after they blocked Market Street. Even with the arrests, police say this was a peaceful protest.Police spokesman Neville Gittens said the protesters were told not to block the intersection and were placed under arrest after failing to adhere to the police orders. It took about 30 minutes before the intersection was cleared.Members of the group Act Against Torture organized the protest. They estimated the crowd to be 300 protesters. In Petaluma, police arrested several demonstrators who blocked intersections downtown and in other areas of the city Tuesday morning. Police said around 40 demonstrators blocked the East Washington Street and North McDowell Boulevard intersection and at Petaluma Boulevard North downtown. Demonstrators also protested at the U.S. Army recruiting office on North McDowell Boulevard. The protests, on the third anniversary of the Irag war, were reported at 10:15 a.m.There were also smaller protests on the campuses of Berkeley and San Jose State.March 20 marks the third anniversary of the beginning of the war.
