Local Groups Respond With Pakistan Earthquake Relief

Relief supplies from around the world, including from the Bay Area, are arriving in Pakistan just days after a devastating earthquake.The Bay Area Muslim community is wasting no time collecting donations to help victims of Pakistan's earthquake.

A U.S. Air Force cargo plane and eight military helicopters loaded with supplies landed near Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.The United States has pledged $50 million for initial relief efforts.Rescuers fear there are hundreds still buried beneath the rubble.A school in northern Pakistan collapsed in the quake, killing as many as 400 children.Pakistan-controlled Kashmir received the brunt of the quake, with more than $19,000 confirmed dead there.Donations for victims of the quake are filling the Hidaya Foundation's warehouse in Santa Clara.The group is a non-profit that helps the poor of South Asia and elsewhere.They already have one shipping container filled and ready to go to Pakistan.The foundation says what people need the most are warm winter clothes and blankets because the earthquake hit many cold mountain villages.
