Nurses, Prisoners, Churches Help Katrina Survivors

Some of the first nurses to volunteer to go to the hurricane zone are back in California.The group got a round of applause at the California Nurses Association Headquarters in Oakland Monday.They worked in shelters, clinics and hospitals.
The California Nurses Association says they have 1,400 more registered nurses signed up and ready to use vacation time to volunteer in the Gulf Coast region.Also:

- Members of an East Bay church are set to make a delivery this week.More than a dozen trucks are getting loaded up to send more than a million pounds of supplies to the Gulf Coast.The Church of God and Christ in Hayward made the plea for help about a week ago and members were stunned by the overwhelming response.Fifteen semi-trucks will carry the supplies to six distribution centers in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.They are expected to leave the Bay Area by the end of the week.
- Inmates at San Quentin are helping in the Katrina recovery effort.So far, they have collected $3,700.Some inmates gave every penny from their accounts.The inmates are also working on crafts to be sold on eBay later this month.
