Man Found Dead On High School Campus

POSTED: 11:00 am PDT September 8, 2005
UPDATED: 1:03 pm PDT September 8, 2005

A body a custodian discovered Thursday morning on a high school campus in Richmond was not that of a student, Richmond police reported.

The man's body was found at about 6 a.m. in front of John F. Kennedy High School in the 4200 block of Cutting Boulevard, said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.

The 20-year-old black man was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, said Gagan.

The body was discovered "right in front of the doors, on the campus," said Gagan, adding that it was still lying there when students began arriving at about 7:30 a.m. Gagan reported that the crime scene was cleared by 8 a.m. "If you didn't already know there was a crime scene here you wouldn't know it," he said.

"The students have already been diverted away from the crime scene and are in class," said West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Paul Ehara, who was on campus. Ehara reported that an announcement went out over the loudspeaker asking students to "continue with their exemplary behavior and focus on academics."

The school counselors were available to students to talk about the incident. In addition, the district was sending over a psychologist, Ehara said. A letter will be sent home to families "to reassure them that the school is the safest place in the community for them (children) to be."
