Top 10 Commuter Tips For During A BART Strike

Tips courtesy 511.org.

  1. Form a carpool with the 511 Ridematch Tool. Coordinate with your carpool early. July 1 is the Friday before a holiday weekend so some people may be making holiday plans and working different hours.
  2. Consider casual carpooling. Casual carpooling is different from traditional carpooling -- you don’t establish your carpool partners in advance. Just show up at a casual carpool pickup site and wait for a carpool destined for a location near where you want to go. There are many casual carpool pick-up locations around the Bay Area. Click here for the Bay Area casual carpool site.
  3. Consider joining a vanpool. Go to the 511.org Rideshare page for a list of vanpools with available seats.
  4. Ride a Bicycle. If you live within a few miles of alternate transit, you may consider riding your bike. Your work may also be close enough that you could ride all the way. Check out the 511 BikeMapper for the bicycle routes between your home and work. Or register with the Bike Buddy Matching tool for an instant list of others to ride with to work. Trying to get across the Bay on your bike? Try a ferry or a bicycle bridge shuttle.
  5. Visit www.511.org frequently for the latest on alternate transit routes, additional transit service, relocated transit stops and shuttle information. Many transit stops may be relocated from within BART facilities. Buses and trains are likely to be crowded during this time. So be patient and keep a watchful eye on your belongings. Click here for the latest on strike related information.
  6. Sign up for FasTrak. Three new FasTrak-only lanes will be opening on the Bay Bridge June 27. With FasTrak, you may be able to avoid long wait times at the tollbooths.
  7. Add a third person to your carpool. Some Bay Area carpool lanes require three or more persons. Check the map of Bay Area carpool lanes, or register with the 511 Ridematch Tool to get a list of others near you interested in carpooling.
  8. Add passengers to your vanpool. If your vanpool has empty seats, reduce your costs by adding one or more of your co-workers — even on a trial basis. A list of those interested in vanpooling can be found using the 511 Ridematch Tool. Or, call 511 and say Rideshare to speak with a vanpool consultant.
  9. Consider alternate routes to work – avoid the most heavily-traveled routes! The Driving Times feature provides real-time traffic information in the Bay Area.
  10. Consider car sharing. While car sharing usually is done on a longer-term basis (rates are monthly, etc.) and may not be the best temporary solution, you may have already been considering it for a long-term strategy. Now is the time to put your plan into action! Go to the City CarShare page for more information. If you have a flexible work schedule, consider adjusting your hours to avoid commuting during peak times. You also may consider working from a different location. If your company has multiple offices or branches, ask your employer if you might be able to work from an office nearer your home.
