VALLEJO, Calif. -- Army Reserve officials broke ground Saturday afternoon on a new
$6.5 million maintenance building that will expand military activity and
provide jobs on Mare Island.
The 20,365-square-foot dual service facility is being built at the
Mare Island U.S. Army Reserve Center at 1481 Railroad Ave.
One portion of the facility will be used for maintenance work on
Army Landing Craft Unit boats, transport tanks and cargo containers. The remainder of the facility will be used for maintenance and repair of Army humvees, bulldozers, trucks and other vehicles.
The facility is part of the 63rd Regional Support Command,
headquartered in Los Alamitos, which oversees 12,000 soldiers and more than
100 Army reserve units in California, Nevada and Arizona.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in May 2004.
