Firefighters Rescue Bridge Worker
UPDATED: 12:31 p.m. PDT June 18, 2003
VALLEJO, Calif. -- A helicopter transported a construction worker to John Muir Medical Center Wednesday morning after a cable broke and hit him in the leg, leaving him hanging from an East Bay bridge structure.
The accident happened on the Carquinez Bridge, near Vallejo, just
after 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The man was apparently standing on the catwalk, 200 feet up, when a
winch cable struck him and knocked him down.
The man is recovering at the hospital, where he was airlifted following the rescue.
Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said, "We're very near completion on this bridge, and we're taking down some of the temporary works. We have a tramway decline we used to use to pull equipment up and down the back span of the bridge that we're pulling down. As it was coming down, it slipped a little bit and struck this individual and he tumbled a little ways down the footbridge and received some abdominal injuries."
Bridge construction workers wear full body harnesses, added Ney.
Ney said the bridgework will be complete in November.
