WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- An Antioch woman gave birth Friday on Highway 4 in Concord.
The father, Albert Amigo, delivered the baby when the couple couldn't make it to the Kaiser Walnut Creek Medical Center. Amigo called 911, but had to take matters into his own hands while he waited for help to arrive.
The baby was born on the front seat of their pickup truck. Amigo gave his wife, Candida Gonzalez-Amigo, all the credit, "She did it all," he told NBC-11.
Candida Gonzalez-Amigo told NBC-11 it all began around 3 a.m. when they got in the car. When they passed Willow Pass Road, her head came out. She told NBC-11, "I just gave one push and he caught her."
The 911 operator told Albert to tie off the umbilical cord. The resourceful father took advantage of new white sneakers and used the shoelaces.
Paramedics arrived 10 minutes after the baby was born. The baby girl, Sophia Gonzalez-Amigo, and mom are resting comfortably at the hospital. Candida told NBC-11, "We have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving -- that my husband was there with me and she's so healthy, she's so perfectly healthy."
The father, Albert, says Sophia -- daughter No. 4 -- is the last one.
