Basin Complex Blaze 72 Percent Contained
Burnout and suppression operations continued Tuesday in the battle to contain the Basin Complex Fire in Monterey County, which has burned more than 137,000 acres.Crews worked to expand the containment line along Chew's Ridge while fire suppression repair work began on the Indians Fire and continued on the West Basin Fire.A community fire information meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Tularcitos Elementary School in Carmel Valley Village.
Voluntary evacuations were in effect Tuesday for Carmel Valley Road from the intersection of San Clemente Road (Sleepy Hollow) south to the intersection of Arroyo Seco Road; Arroyo Seco Road west of the junction with Carmel Valley Road; and Cachagua Road and Tassajara Road down to the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center.Emergency passes are required for residents and their employees to enter voluntary evacuation areas along the Carmel Valley Road and Cachagua Road. Passes are issued by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and are available from officers at checkpoints located at the intersection of Carmel Valley Road and Sleepy Hollow Road, and Carmel Valley Road and Arroyo Seco Road.The fire was 72 percent contained Tuesday with final containment expected by July 30. Almost 2,100 personnel in 58 crews have been assigned to the fire along with 130 engines, 11 helicopters, six air tankers and 22 dozers.Nearly 60 structures, including 26 residences, have been destroyed, and more than 1,600 structures have been threatened since the fire broke out June 21. Nine injuries have been reported. The cost to suppress the fire is more than $66 million thus far.
