The Santa Clara Sheriff's office said Wednesday that the armed suspect that was fatally shot by sheriffs during a marijuana eradication raid last Thursday has been identified as 20-year-old Artemio Calderon Maldonado of Modesto.

Maldonado was killed by deputies as they attempted to secure an illegal marijuana grow targeted for eradication in the mountains above Saratoga, deputies said.

Two other men were not caught. The search for them continues. They are described as Hispanic men in their mid-20s. Officers said they were armed and dangerous. After the raid, officers cautioned neighbors to be on the lookout.

Anyone who has any information about the investigation is encouraged to call Detective Sergeant Leon at 408-808-4500 or the anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.

The pot raid occurred in Saratoga off the 16000 block of Bolhman Road near Canon Road.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Marijuana Eradication Team, along with Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP), planned the eradication effort.

The teams had planned to remove several marijuana gardens in the area.

CAMP was created in 1983 and is run by the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Rodriguez said the department and other members of the campaign conduct eradications a few times a year, mostly in the summertime when marijuana plants are in bloom.

"When we know there is a garden we put together a team, go to the area, locate the garden and then eradicate the plants," Rodriguez said.

Sometimes marijuana gardens are spotted when helicopters fly over the area. Last week, a nearby resident had informed authorities that there were suspicious activities in the area.
