Memorial Services Set For Veteran Bay Area Fire Chief

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Memorial services have been scheduled for Tuesday in San Rafael for a 44-year-old Southern Marin Fire Protection District deputy chief who died in the line of duty last week.A funeral will be held for Deputy Chief Jeffrey Powers at Saint Isabella Parish at 1 Trinity Way at 11 a.m.A memorial with full firefighter honors will be held at Angelico Hall on the Dominican University of California campus located at 50 Acacia Ave. A reception following the memorial service is being held at the Embassy Suites San Rafael, 101 McInnis Parkway.
An autopsy was underway Friday on Powers, who collapsed at work Thursday.Assistant Marin County Coroner Gary Tindel said Powers collapsed while at Station 2 in Sausalito. He was taken to Marin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1 p.m.Battalion Chief Mike Giannini said Powers collapsed around 12:20 p.m. while talking with other fire district employees at the Sausalito station on Spencer Avenue. He was with the Southern Marin district for 23 years, Giannini said. Powers was named deputy chief in April 2007.Powers leaves behind his wife Joann and two boys, ages 14 and 11.Donations for Powers' family can be made at any West American Bank location, attn: Jeff Powers Memorial Fund.
