SF To Greet Olympic Torch With 'Alarm And Protest'

Supervisors Debate Takes Stand Against Torch

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved with an 8-3 vote Supervisor Chris Daly's controversial resolution addressing human rights concerns when the Beijing Olympic torch is welcomed in San Francisco on April 9.

The resolution would welcome the torch with "alarm and protest at the failure of China to meet its past solemn promises to the international community, including the citizens of San Francisco, to cease the egregious and ongoing human rights abuses in China and occupied Tibet."

Tuesday morning, Nancy Pelosi called for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies.

The Bay Area congresswoman and Speaker of the House said President George W. Bush should be a no-show at the ceremony, though U.S. athletes should compete in the Beijing games.

The White House has said that the games are supposed to be about the athletes, not politics.

San Francisco supervisors had considered two resolutions that would have set the tone for the arrival of the Olympic flame next week.

Two options were on the table -- The Daly proposal -- and another that would welcome the Human Rights torch along with the Olympic torch.

That quiet protest of China’s human rights record is in contrast to the resolution.

Supervisor Jake McGoldrick told NBC11, "We think it’s important to say we believe there are instances of human rights violations that are serious."

Newsom said, "Every day our contingency plans change based on reality and what’s happening around the world."

Also Tuesday, the city announced the route of the Olympic Torch race through the city on April 9.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had said that keeping the route under wraps was about security not secrecy.

Start:
  • The race will begin at McCovey Cove at AT&T Park
  • North to 3rd Street
  • 3rd Street to the Embarcadero
  • Embarcadero To Jefferson Street
  • Jefferson to Hyde Street
  • Hyde to Beach Street
  • Beach to Polk Street
  • Polk to Bay Street
  • Bay all the way back to the Embarcadero
  • The race end in Justin Herman Plaza
  • The race is six miles.
