LOS ANGELES -- Federal agents questioned a Los Angeles-area resident in the aftermath of the bomb blast at a military recruiting station in Times Square but found no evidence linking the individual to the explosion, according to the FBI.Images "No arrests were made and no one was charged," FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said Thursday night.
The Los Angeles-area investigation began after lawmakers in Washington, D.C., received letters claiming responsibility for the no-injury bombing in Manhattan early Thursday morning. The letters, sent to 10 congressional Democrats in Manila envelopes, included photos of a man in front of the recruiting station, along with the statement, "Happy New Year, We Did It."Also attached was a 10-page manifesto, NBC4 reported. The envelopes bore the name of a man with a Los Angeles-area return address, and FBI agents questioned a man who lives in the Hollywood Hills, according to NBC4. Eimiller confirmed that FBI agents questioned someone on a Los Angeles area property on Thursday night, but the individual's identity was not disclosed."We're continuing to investigate, but right now there is no evidence linking the individual being questioned to the incident in New York or the letters themselves," Eimiller said.NBC4's Robert Kovacik said the man who was questioned apparently sent the packages to Congress to protest the war in Iraq. He is simply an antiwar activist, Kovacik reported, and his correspondence to lawmakers was just a coincidence, sent to mark this month's fifth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq. The red-headed man in the photos appeared to be in his 30s, a congressional staff member who saw the envelopes told WNBC-TV in New York. Times Square surveillance cameras show the alleged bomber was wearing a hood while riding a bicycle to the recruitment office. The suspect is seen getting off the bike, walking up to the office, planting the device and riding away. Moments later the explosion occurs but no one was injured in the blast.Previous Stories:
