SAN FRANCISCO -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom joined college officials Wednesday morning at a grand-opening ceremony for City College of San Francisco's new Mission Campus. The event took place at the college's newly revamped $75.6 million campus, located at 1125 Valencia St. The new campus features a state-of-the-art library, a 300-seat auditorium, new computer labs and a child development area. "The students at City College of San Francisco are our nation's next generation of leaders, and they deserve the best educational facilities so they can succeed," Pelosi said in a prepared statement. "Learning at this new, world-class campus will help tomorrow's innovators and keep San Francisco and America vibrant and competitive in the global economy."
Construction was funded by the Proposition A Educational Facilities Improvement Bonds and included a state contribution of $30 million, according to college officials. The campus now consists of a new building as well as the original building, which underwent a complete renovation. The college, which was relocated to 375 Alabama St. during construction, has experienced an increase in enrollment since returning to its original location last fall and is serving nearly 11,000 credit and noncredit students this spring semester, college officials reported. "The grand opening of the new Mission Campus symbolizes permanent, equitable access to post secondary education, and the realization of the Mission community's dream," said dean of the campus Carlota del Portillo in a prepared statement.
