Tiger Attack 911 Tapes Released

Zoo Worker Tells Dispatcher Brothers "Might Be On Drugs"

POSTED: 11:18 am PST January 15, 2008
UPDATED: 1:38 pm PST January 16, 2008

In the moments after the Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo, a zoo employee wondered if the two bleeding survivors might be on drugs while another can be overheard saying an animal escape was "virtually impossible." The unnamed employees can be heard on excerpts of 911 calls made in the moments after the attack, and released to the media this morning by the San Francisco Department of Emergency services.

The zoo employee told the dispatcher that one of the survivors is “agitated” and told him they had been “attacked by a lion.” Even though both brothers were bleeding, the zoo employee seemed to only reluctantly call an ambulance because the brothers “wanted him too."

The recordings were made just after 5 p.m. on Christmas Day, not long after Tatiana, a Siberian tiger, had escaped her enclosure and attacked three visitors, Carlos Sousa Jr. and Paul and Khulbir Dahliwal. Sousa was killed and the Dahliwal brothers both suffered deep gashes from the tigerÂ’s claws.

Also released today was an audio excerpt from the frantic 911 call made by one of the Dahliwal brothers just minutes after the attack. The phone call was made the call from the zooÂ’s Terrace Restaurant where the caller and his brother had sought shelter from the attacking tiger.

The Dahliwal brother is heard repeatedly pleading for rescue workers to reach them and care for his injured brother. At one point he asks that a helicopter be sent to the zoo to rescue them. The attack victim is also overheard berating a café worker who isn’t moving quickly enough to get him a towel, presumably to help stop his brother's bleeding.

During the call, a San Francisco 911 dispatcher implores the brother to stay calm, and that medical help cannot enter the zoo until it is deemed safe.

At no point during the audio excerpts released today is any mention made of what led up to the tiger attack, or the details of the attack. A time frame is also loosely set. An audio time stamp pinpoints the Dahliwal phone call at 5:18 p.m. During that call, Dahliwal can be heard saying he has been waiting “10 minutes” for help to arrive.

Brothers Go To Court

The brothers involved in the attack were in court Tuesday on a separate issue.

A Santa clara County judge handed Paul Dhaliwal an additional criminal charge from another case -- battery of a police officer, NBC11's Damian Trujillo reported.

Prosecutors said Paul assaulted the officer in a September incident.

The brothers are already facing charges of public drunkenness and resisting arrest from that incident, Trujillo reported.

The brothers will be back in court Feb. 13 to answer to those charges.
