Beijing Olympic Viewing Celebration

Join NBC Bay Area at the Beijing Olympic Viewing Celebrations in San Jose, Redwood City and Livermore.

Join us to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics on a big screen projection. NBC Bay Area will host The Beijing Olympic Viewing Celebration Friday August 8,2008 at three Bay Area locations: St. James Park in Downtown San Jose; Courthouse Square in Redwood City; and outside the Bankhead Theater in Livermore.

This unique event will be the largest viewing celebration in the Bay Area, uniting thousands of viewers. Open to anyone and everyone the celebration includes screening of the Opening Ceremony Celebration from Beijing, special appearances from local Olympians, Chinese cultural art, Lion dancing, live music and much more.

The Langley- A Tribute to Legends
San Francisco and Fairfax

Join NBC Bay Area at the first-time foundation fundraising event, “The Langley – A Tribute to Legends.

Jim Langley, a retired PGA Professional from Cypress Point, welcomes Arnold Palmer to The Legacy, A Tribute to Legends. The Langley Event is a fundraising golf and social event designed to honor the game’s legends.

The event starts off with a dinner where the legends will be honored in San Francisco City Hall on August 10. The following day, there will be a golf tournament at The Meadow Club in Fairfax.

Having a physical disability should not stop you from going out and being active! In fact, many people with all sorts of disabilities have found golf to be a great way to overcome physical challenges and to just have fun.

Saving Strokes is a program of the American Heart Association that coincides with the Northern California PGA Foundation. Proceeds for this event will go to Saving Strokes and NCPGA Foundation.

Pistahan Parade and Festival
San Francisco

Join NBC Bay Area at the Pistahan Parade and Festival.

The Pistahan Parade and Festival highlighting the Filipino American Community in Northern California will celebrate its 15th anniversary, featuring Filipino-American cultural exhibits and pavilions showcasing heritage, health, dance, music, arts and cuisine. The two-day event is expected to draw over 50,000 people.

There are over 400,000 Filipino-Americans in the Bay Area, the second largest Asian American group in Northern California.

The Pistahan Parade kicks off the festival featuring beautiful themed floats, dance troupes, bands and lively contingents. Opening ceremonies begin at 10am on Beale Street, followed by the colorful parade at 11am which starts at Beale Street, marches down Market Street, left on 4th Street, left on Folsom Street and ends at 3rd Street. A special judging area for Best Choreography, Best Costume, Best Spectacle and Best Spirit is located on Market and New Montgomery.

This year’s Grand Marshals are Broadway actors Adam Jacobs and Kelly Kohnert Jacobs, and Disney’s High School Musical actor Arielle Jacobs also joins the parade. All three will be performing on stage at the Pistahan Festival at the Yerba Buena Gardens. Dan and Sunny Dykwel will serve as the Hermano and Hermana Mayor, the ceremonial hosts of the festival.

Faith Fancher Breast Cancer Challenge Run/Walk

Join NBC Bay Area at Faith Fancher Breast Cancer Challenge Run/Walk.

Join us at the Annual “Faith Fancher Breast Cancer Challenge” on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Lake Merritt in Oakland. Walk/run 3 miles around Lake Merritt to support breast cancer research, treatment, and education.

Faith Fancher was the first black woman reporter at WBR in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1983, she came to Oakland's KTVU-Channel 2 and she was a mainstay on "The Ten O'clock News." When Faith was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she founded Friends of Faith Inc., a nonprofit organization that is comprised of several media professionals and other volunteers. Friends of Faith, Inc., is a nonprofit charitable organization of professional women dedicated to fighting the breast cancer epidemic through the power of information, providing funds to local organizations, and providing direct assistance to underserved and under-insured women in their battle against breast cancer. The organization has raised and donated more than $700,000 for individuals with breast cancer and for grassroots organizations.

Pets In Need was founded in 1965 by Jean Mahoney and Alice Hodges to help lost pets get home and to provide information about pet care to people. Most of all they wanted all dogs and cats to have loving homes.

In 1993, Pets In Need entered a new era of service to our community's animals with the purchase of a plumbing supply warehouse and retrofitted it to be an adoption shelter.

No animal suitable for re-homing is every put to death, no matter how long it takes. Pets In Need is committed to finding homes for each animal in the shelter. Every dog or cat is spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Growing Up Asian in America Poster and Essay Contests

Join NBC Bay Area in supporting the Asian Pacific Fund's Growing Up Asian in America, essay and art competition.

Growing Up Asian in America is one of the largest celebrations of Asian Heritage in the nation and is a signature program of the Asian Pacific Fund. Now entering its eleventh year, the program begins with an art and essay contest for K-12th grade students in nine Bay Area counties. Students compete for an annual prize pool of $26,000 in savings bonds awards. Student winners and their families are honored at a party in April.

In May the educational program continues with exhibits of winning entries that are hosted by public libraries and viewed by over 1.3 million Bay Area residents. The exhibits travel to more than 60 libraries between May and December.
