John Farley

NBC11 Chief Meteorologist

John Farley is NBC Weather Plus chief meteorologist.

Rain or Shine, Chief Meteorologist John Farley is there every evening Monday through Friday at 5, 6 and 11. You can also catch his forecasts on Weather Plus, NBC11’s 24/7 all-digital Bay Area weather channel on 11.2 and nbc11.com. John joined the NBC11 team in March of 1996, as the morning meteorologist, and moved to the evenings in September 1998.

John's passion is, of course, weather and he calls himself a "weather nut." John has a Masters Degree in Meteorology from San Jose State University and was recently honored with the College of Science’s “Graduate of the Last Decade” Award. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds its Broadcasting Seal for Television. In 2007 he was awarded the EMMY for best weathercaster.

In addition to his daily television weather duties, John has worked on an FAA project aimed at developing short-term fog forecasts for San Francisco International Airport. In 2002 John and his colleagues at San Jose State University received the FAA’s Excellence in Aviation Award for their work on this project.

John has also been very active with students and teachers. This started with his involvement in the Math and Science Teacher Education Program (MASTEP) at San Jose State University. The goal of MASTEP is to alleviate the critical math and science teacher shortage that currently exists in the Bay Area. Over the years John has visited hundreds of classrooms, talking about what else - weather.

Before joining NBC11, John worked as a weather producer at KRON and also worked as an intern for the San Francisco Bay Area National Weather Service. He is a native of Chelmsford, Massachusetts and received his undergraduate degree in Finance from of the University of Massachusetts. He's always been interested in the weather, but as a kid he really got hooked when "The Blizzard of '78" caused school to be cancelled for a whole week! As a Bay Area meteorologist, he particularly enjoys the challenges of forecasting our many microclimates.

John enjoys bike riding and he loves to golf although he admits that he's not very good. His favorite pastime is going to the beach with his wife, their two daughters, and son.
