POSTED: 10:26 am PST January 11, 2006
UPDATED: 10:58 am PDT October 11, 2006

Finding out quickly if you have meningitis is crucial.

But classic symptoms including: rash, headache and a stiff neck, can take almost 24 hours to show up.

Researchers say leg pain, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin color are symptoms that show up about eight hours after infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says three groups should be given the meningitis vaccine.

The recommendation includes children 11 to 12 years old, teenagers -- starting from high school and college freshmen living in dorms.
