More than 75 people have now filed suit over pedicure-related infections at nail salons in Santa Clara County, an attorney representing most of the plaintiffs said Wednesday. The complaints, filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court, accuse salon owners of failing to properly disinfect whirlpool spas and other instruments in the salons as is required by California's salon-specific health and safety regulations, attorney Rob Bohn said Wednesday. The complaints also allege that the owners have a history of violating state and health regulations, according to Bohn. The makers of salon chairs are also charged in the complaint with improperly designing the chairs and making them difficult to clean, Bohn said.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages for permanent scarring of their legs and bodies and a court order requiring the defendants to strictly abide by California health and safety regulations and to provide adequate product training, according to Bohn.At least nine salons have been named in the suits, including Silver Nails II, Nails National, Kathy Nails, and Blossom Nails in San Jose. Also named are True Nails in Los Gatos, Jeannie's Nails in Saratoga, Manicure Beach in Santa Clara and Top Hair and Nails in Mountain View, Bohn said. More salons are being investigated, according to Bohn.Speaker Pro Tem Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has introduced a bill that would set minimum health standards for all nail salons in California. Assembly Bill 1263 was approved by the state Assembly on June 2, according to Yee's spokesman Adam Keigwin. The bill is now in the Senate Appropriations Committee and is due to be heard on Aug. 15, a spokeswoman for Yee's office said Wednesday.
